essential minerals, zincWhy is it that our fingernails develop white spots? Let’s look at a few different conditions that could cause this.

White spots on your nails, also known as leukonychia, can show up when an underlying infection is present, could be the result of minor injury to the nail bed, or could signify an allergy to a product used on the nail. If other symptoms are present, such as hair loss, nail peeling and thinning, and a slow immune system, the white spots are probably caused by a zinc deficiency.

Zinc is classified as an essential mineral because of the vast and varied bodily functions which depend on it. It is important to:
• prostate gland function
• preventing acne and regulating oil glands
• collagen formation
• a healthy immune system, and
• the healing of wounds
Zinc lozenges help relieve symptoms of the common cold and may be able to help reduce the duration of colds by boosting your immune system.

Zinc is plentiful in our diet. A nutrition plan rich in eggs, legumes, fish, poultry, meats, mushrooms, and whole grains, will provide you with the daily recommended allowance of zinc.

For example, poached eggs on whole grain toast, sprinkled with cayenne pepper, automatically gives you three sources of zinc. Add a green salad which includes dandelion leaves and parsley and you get two more.

Q: Have you ever used zinc lozenges when trying to deal with a cold? Have you found it useful in the treatment of acne? What other ways do you incorporate zinc into your diet?
